The 70% Solution: How Your Walls Can Pay Your Electric Bill

Living in Florida means making a peace treaty with the heat.

For most homeowners, that treaty is expensive. We run our air conditioners constantly, battling the humidity and the sun, often dreading the arrival of the monthly energy bill.

At Florida Green Building Construction, we believe you shouldn’t have to pay a “comfort tax” just to live in your own home. Our mission is to build homes that are not just safe, but Highly Energy Efficient—delivering energy savings of up to 70% compared to standard existing homes.

Here is how we turn your walls into a money-saving asset.

The Problem with “Sticks” (Thermal Bridging)

To understand why our homes are so efficient, you have to understand where standard homes fail.

Most houses are built with wood studs spaced every 16 inches. While the space between the studs is insulated, the wood stud itself is not. Wood absorbs heat and transfers it from the hot exterior right into your cool living room. This is called Thermal Bridging.

In a typical wood-frame home, up to 25% of the wall is made of uninsulated wood studs. That is like leaving one window open all summer long.

The Florida Green Solution: The “Cooler” Effect

We build with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). Imagine a high-quality Styrofoam cooler. It keeps ice frozen for days because the insulation is continuous—there are no gaps.

Our walls work the same way:

  1. Continuous Insulation: Two thick layers of EPS foam wrap around the concrete core. There are no studs to bridge the heat. The insulation is unbroken around the entire perimeter of your house.
  2. The Thermal Battery (Thermal Mass): Concrete is heavy and dense. It creates “thermal lag.” It absorbs the day’s heat slowly and releases it at night. This means your home stays naturally cooler during the peak heat of the day, so your AC unit doesn’t have to work as hard.

The 70% Difference

When you combine this superior insulation with high-performance windows and a sealed roof system, the results are drastic.

  • Smaller AC Units: Because the house is so efficient, we can often install smaller HVAC systems that cost less to run.
  • Lower Monthly Bills: Our clients frequently see energy savings of 50% to 70%. Over the course of a 30-year mortgage, that is tens of thousands of dollars that stay in your bank account instead of going to the utility company.

Patience Pays Off

Building an energy-efficient ICF home takes more precision. It requires careful detailing to ensure the building envelope is perfectly sealed.

Other builders might say, “It’s faster to just use wood.” And they are right—it is faster for them. But at Florida Green Building Construction, we are thinking about you.

We are patient builders. We take the time to construct a home that performs at the highest level because we care about your long-term future. We want you to enjoy a comfortable, cool home with low bills for decades to come.
